Considered one of the most challenging of mediums, fresco painting today is indeed a dying craft. The aim of this workshop is to teach artists the beauty of a mineral-based medium which will remain intact throughout the coming centuries. The term buon fresco can only be applied to a specific technique and must not be confused with other wall painting techniques commonly used today. During our workshop we shall guide students through the many phases involved in the making of buon fresco, following the same methods used by the great Florentine Renaissance masters.

In this two-week intensive course, Daniela Murphy Corella and her team will give a series of lessons aimed at describing the different wall painting techniques used during the Renaissance. These will include buon fresco, white-lime fresco, secco work, the use of gold leaf on walls, and the use of wax to create relief. Lectures will be followed by practical lessons in which students will be taught how to mix and apply mortar onto a sample wall, make a cartoon, design a sinopia, and finally how to apply water-distempered pigments onto fresh plaster, focusing on the chemical reaction which takes place, fossilizing the pigments and rendering the colour as strong as marble. The workshop will also include visits to restoration sites normally unavailable to the public, giving the students the unique opportunity to admire fresco work and modern restoration practices, directly from the scaffolding.

Daniela and her team are fresco restorers who work for the Sopintendenza dei Beni Culturali of Florence on extremely prestigious restoration projects. Works of art restored by them include frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Agnolo Gaddi, Federico Zuccari, Il Volterrano, Gerardo Starnina, Giotto, Giorgio Vasari and Alessandro Allori.
Early reservations are recommended, as student numbers are purposely limited to allow for a high degree of individual attention.
The cost of some of the materials are included in the fee. Other materials, however, are to be supplied by the student. A materials list will be provided upon registration.
