Renaissance Painting Techniques

Dates: July 20 to July 31, 2009
Instructor: Jered Woznicki
Location: Via San Niccolò 88/r, Florence

Enjoy a rare opportunity to gain insight and practical experience in the oil painting techniques used by the Renaissance and Baroque masters.

In a two-week, intensive, hands-on workshop, Jered Woznicki, senior painting and drawing instructor at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, will guide students through the underpainting- overpainting techniques of the Renaissance masters. After a detailed slide presentation and lecture that illustrates the history and technical practices of the Florentine and Venetian painters, students will recreate a painting in the method used by Raphael, Titian, Andrea del Sarto, or van Dyck.

Each stage of the old masters' underpainting-and-overpainting procedure will be discussed at length, from the ground - the surface on which one paints - through the various layers of paint to the final glazes and tonings.

The workshop includes a guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery, to allow for direct examination of the structure of these Renaissance paintings.
