Painting Methods of the
Great European Academies

Dates: June 22 to July 3, 2009
Instructor: Martinho Correia
Location: Via Fiesolana 34/r, Florence

Bougereau, Gérôme and Ciseri created paintings displaying the culmination of five hundred years of traditional painting practice. These three artists were among thousands trained in academies spread throughout 19th-century Europe. In the 20th century, traditional practice in these schools declined; methods and secrets were ignored and almost lost. Angel Academy of Art presents a rare experience to gain insight into the working methods of these 19th-century masters where students will recreate a masterpiece in the academic tradition.

In this two-week intensive course, Martinho Correia, instructor at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, will guide students through the painting processes used in the 19th-century academies. With students copying from high quality reproductions, all steps of the painting process will be explained. Beginning with canvas preparation, students will work through the drawing stage and the subsequent painting layers to a final rendering of the image. The workshop also incorporates an introductory lecture, demonstrations, and a visit to the Moderna Gallery in the Pitti Palace, where students can observe first hand the work of 19th-century masters.

Each student will study and employ the method used by Bouguereau, Gérôme and Leighton by recreating one of the masterworks listed below. Please choose which image you would like to copy during the workshop and inform us of your decision so that we may supply you with a reproduction of this work.
