The Angel Academy of Art's programme is a unique four-level course,
developed over 30 years by painter and portraitist, Michael John
Angel. It consists of a graduated series of specific exercises, each
project building on the lessons learned from the previous one. The
course design is based on techniques and methods developed in the
19th century French ateliers and later refined. It is the fastest way
possible to learn how to draw and paint representationally at the
highest levels. In the end, any artist who can create at this level
is able to express artistically whatever he/she wants.
Because of the necessities of an extended stay in Italy, many
students are only able to study with us for a limited period of time.
In these specific cases we encourage the student to push as far as
possible into the curriculum in order to gain as much insight into,
and experience with, the traditional principles of drawing, given the
time allowed. A typical one-term student, for example, can delve
deeply into the first phase of the mastery of drawing, dealing with
the famous Bargue drawings, in addition to the usual exercises from
the live model (constructs, silhouettes, etc.)
This 'hands-on' practice can serve as a basis for further home study
but cannot be expected to train the individual to the high level
required today for a professional artist. However, such a mini-course
successfully introduces some of the technical principles to the student.
The Academy's aims are to foster a student's skill through classic
training and practice using the same methods that were used to teach
many of the great masters of the past. At the same time, each
student's individual strength and artistic interpretation is
encouraged. Boundaries are pushed and the student can emerge as a
highly skilled and confident artist. A Diploma of Excellence is awarded to students who complete the Fundamental programme.
